Haha that's awesome. With the mice and rats I've had, the boys always had more odor. I'm not sure if mice have the same scent glands as rats? I always loved the boys more though, as they're the more cuddly types I've found.

Totally agree. My 2 boys are fat, lazy snugglebums but yes they have a a lot more odor. I don't really mind it too much but my husband says they stink.

Daryl is so cute!! I demand more pics. ;)

He definitely has a muskier odor than the girls. Since I washed the wheel, the smell has gone down a lot. It was like that with my girls too though, when they would muck their wheel all up in one night. Not as musky but still stinky. They rarely do that now so maybe he'll stop too.

My husband did comment on the smell this morning but I can tell he likes him. The nicknames are a big clue to how he really feels.

I wish I knew more about his care over the last 8 months. Hoping he adjust well and becomes one of those cuddley bucks I've read about.

I'll try for more pics. :)

Definitely more pictures :D I imagine some initial scent marking would be a possibility for the first couple days? That's so cute he's giving nicknames. My fiance just keeps calling the crabs "horrible things"

Will they toilet train to a bowl of sand? That was the only way we could stand having four male gerbils. I would change it out daily and it kept the smell way down. I'm sure diet and stress play a role as well.

Love the nickname. Glad to see he's doing so well!

Not from what I've read. The girls do seem to somewhat pick certain pee spots but poo goes wherever it lands. I'm not sure about Daryl yet.

Food and stress definitely play a role. I know the girls smelled way worse after first getting them. They also seem to smell less after I switched them over to a new seed mix.

I had my rats "litter trained", but it took a long time and some just wanted nothing to do with it, or would sleep in the "litter"

Some pics from this morning. Now that he's had the opportunity to mark up the tank, I wanted to pull that Petco box out of there.

Did you build the popsicle playground yourself? I'm impressed!

He's so cute. I love his color and markings.

I found the idea on pinterest. I'm not the best at coming up with my own and even the ones I copy end up crooked.

So this was yesterday:
Image
(yes, he poo'd on me lol)

He's already quite willing to hop on my hand when I offer it and is pretty calm when I hold him. It took me months to get any of the girls like that and even the best behaved ones aren't quite as chill in my hands. I don't know if he was handled a lot before or if it's just a boy thing. I've read that since they have to be kept alone they're more dependent on playtime with their people but I didn't expect it to happen so quickly. Maybe a combination of the two.

And here's a couple snuggle shots of Hashbrown and Bacon in the coconut:
