Lots of Moss!
Lots of Moss!
So I bought a bunch of sphagnum moss today for hanging baskets and just went crazy with it and covered the whole substrate with it. I was just wondering if there are any problems this could cause for the crabs, there is about 7 inches of substrate and about 1-2 inches of moss on top. Thanks!
Re: Lots of Moss!
I think they'll love it! The only thing I'd watch for is mold possibility, but one of the more experienced crabbers may have another opinion.

I agree, I think mold may be the only thing to watch out for. I can't think of any other problem with it. Eventually the crabs will mix it into the substrate as they tunnel around.

ditto what they said. they'll absolutely love it! but be careful of mold and or food getting in there.

Re: Lots of Moss!
Mold is the big one. I use it like this for some of my other critters, and I get a lot of mold growth from it.

You should soak the moss in salt water.

Re: Lots of Moss!
I soak my moss in freshwater. I use salt water to mix my sub and do not wish to add any more salt to the sub. Moss almost always gets mixed in with the sub even when it's in a container, at least in part, because your crabs will kick it out of the pit and into the sand. Additional salt can cause build up which can cause burns to both you and your crabs.
