What are your favorite animal forums?

Post by fantasybookworm » Wed Jul 01, 2015 6:53 pm

I'm a huge fan of forums for learning about a new animal & for connecting with other owners & asking questions. My first animal forum was for my hedgehog, & I'm still a member (and a moderator now) of the forum 6 years after joining. I've also joined a couple other forums here & there for different animals I had temporarily (a budgie, a quaker parrot, & a bearded dragon). I try to bookmark good forums when I find them or someone else recommends them so I have a good source of information to check out in the event that I end up with an animal unexpectedly some day, or if someone else asks me something about an animal.

So...I was just curious, how many people here are on other animal-related forums? What are your favorite forums? What ones do you recommend for different species you may have or love? I'd love to hear what your favorite go-tos for information are for different animals! :)

To start us off...

http://www.quakerparrots.com/forum/inde ... howforum=3 This was the forum that helped me out when I unexpectedly became a foster home for a Quaker parrot for 2 weeks. She was found outside by some nice people & brought in to the wildlife rehab I volunteer at & the rehab wasn't a great place to keep a flighted parrot, so the rehabber had me bring her home for 2 weeks until I took her to a parrot rescue. This forum helped me a lot with understanding Quaker personalities & suggestions for getting her on healthy food, etc.

https://www.beardeddragon.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=65 I joined this forum when I spent a month taking care of a very sick hatchling bearded dragon from the pet store I worked at. I ended up losing him, sadly. But the forum was a huge help as I gave myself a crash course in beardie care & gave me a lot of support & advice as I tried to nurse the little guy.

http://www.hedgehogcentral.com/forums/ And the forums closest to my heart, my hedgie forum. They were my first animal-related community, and helped me become a better pet owner. I was too attached to the forums to leave after I lost my hedgie & stuck around to keep answering questions. I ended up becoming a moderator a year or two ago & am still going strong on there. :) Hoping to get another hedgehog soon so I can go back to contributing stories & experiences with a hedgie again!

Edit: I forgot the forums I used when I was doing research on sugar gliders for a friend! http://www.sugarglider.com/glidergossip/ I didn't participate in the forums much, but did a ton of reading to compile a care guide of sorts & people seemed nice from the threads I read, and they had a ton of information.

http://holisticferret60.proboards.com/ And this is the forum my friend used for her rescue ferret, and I believe she's now a moderator on there as well. They seem like a pretty good forum, & they have a raw mentoring group for people wanting to switch their ferrets to a raw diet. :)

I love frogs, hamsters, mice, and leopard geckos, but technically I'm not registered on any forums. I just watch. :)

I recently shared this one for geckos here. I'm not active on it anymore but I did like it.

I like this one for mice. They have a "tough love" approach to giving advice and aren't quite as active as I'm used to seeing with other forums.

I am a member at this hamster forum but I don't ever post. A lot of great info though. I don't have hamsters anymore but I lurk a little when I'm bored or just looking for toy ideas for the mice.

For sure! I hope it didn't sound like I was saying it didn't. I wouldn't have shared it if I thought otherwise. :)

I really like http://www.fishlore.com/ these days for aquarium advice. They seem to have very knowledgeable people and aren't afraid to set newbies straight. I used other forums in the past, but they aren't nearly as active or diverse anymore.

For reptiles I tend to turn to http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/forums/ first. They aren't super active, but it's care information out of the UK and Europe, and they have much higher standards then in the US.

For my exotic roaches, http://www.roachforum.com/ because they have a slew of researchers who are active.

And then for anything else bug related, http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/forum.php because with 2.2 million posts I can usually find out what I need to know instantly, and with 40K members someone is always around to answer fast and there are tons of experts there.

Oh! And for goldfish, http://www.kokosgoldfish.invisionzone.com/forum/ even though they can be a bit overwhelming.

http://explore.org/live-cams/player/puffin-burrow-cam. Although it's only seasonal, I've been hooked on the three Puffin cams (burrow, loafing ledge and boulder berm) on explore.org's website.

http://forum.thefunmouse.com. Like CallaLily, I've been a member of this forum for a few years and have gained a huge amount of info to make my mice's lives better. It's like HCA for the murine set  !
PPs are Big Enzo, Charles Paris and Mr Pinch
On the Big Beach in the Sky: Murray, Gino, Oscar, Gordon, Ignatz, Harry and King Felix the Pale
Also Mom to Imogene the Syrian Hamster

Yay, thanks guys! :D Bookmarking all of the ones I don't already have bookmarked. I really appreciate everyone sharing, they all sound like great forums. I'm always caught off guard a bit as well by forums that aren't too active. This one & my hedgie forum are always quite busy, so when I find a forum with maybe one new post a day, I get really confused. But they're still great for research purposes at least. :D
