Tote Crabitat
Ok, so my friends and family keep buying me crabs as gifts and now I have 20 crabs crammed into a 40 gallon. I don't have lots of money so I'm making a tote tank, but I need to know where can I get a giant tote big enough for al of them? I am willing to attach two together to make sure they have enough climbing space.

You're probably better off doing a tote in addition to the 40 gallon...how big are all of the crabs?
As far as locations to check for totes, home improvement stores like Menards, Home Depot, etc. Some hardware stores might have them as well. The largest tote sizes are typically not clear, so you won't be able to see in, and you'd have to make sure they have light provided somehow.. As far as clear totes go, you're not going to find one that's bigger than the 40 gallon tank. The ones I found were 32 1/8" long, 19 1/8" wide, and 13 1/4" tall, but I'm pretty sure the measurements were taken at the top, not the bottom. Since the walls slanted in a little, the footprint for molting was even smaller. I attached two totes together on top of each other to give height, then did that twice & attached them together with PVC pipe to give more space for molting, etc. My thread is here - viewtopic.php?f=26&t=104186 In the end, the combined totes were taller than a 40 gal, which was nice for giving climbing opportunities, and they were a bit longer, but I'm pretty positive it still wouldn't be large enough for 20 crabs unless they were all smalls and/or teeny crabs.
The main issue I had with the set up was I couldn't keep it warm enough. But that's because I'm currently in a basement bedroom that stays around 66-68F. I moved my guys back into a 40 gal until I've moved & have more control over the room temperature.

Just make sure the measurements from the bottom give enough room when combined. I'm not sure how many you will need exactly...how big are the crabs?DaTrininator wrote: I should do that...... Cool idea

They mentioned above.
I'm still pretty new to all of this, but if it were me, I think I'd leave the four larges in the 40 gallon tank, and move everyone else to a tote crabitat that's 2 or 3 totes connected (or one larger solid colored tote, as long as you can still provide light). Or alternatively, if you're okay with getting a solid-colored tote for now, you could leave the smaller crabs in the tank, and move the 4 large crabs and maybe the mediums to a very large tote like this one - http://www.lowes.com/pd_314139-61896-31 ... 98759&pl=1 If you put them in a tote like that, you'd still have enough height to give them a proper sub depth of 8", and still have climbing room for them.I have 3 tinies 4 large 11 small 2 medium
