Mixing different types of Marine Hermitcrabs

Post by Freedomwolf » Tue Jul 02, 2013 9:35 am

I was wondering, would the long claw hermit crab, the broad clawed hermit crab, and the banded hermit crab found in Maryland, would be two things, one, a good pet, and two, would they collaborate well with the already existing species that we have in pet stores?

You might get faster answers if you placed this in the "Other Crabs" section. ;) You could pm a mod and ask if they can move it.

Personally I wouldn't recommend taking any animal out of the wild and making it into a pet :)

I'm guessing the ones of the NE coast are used to cooler waters and may not do well in warmer waters that the tropical species like. But I dunno. Just a guess.

North Atlantic crabs like in Maryland would need to be in a tank with a "chiller" unit that uses an A/C unit to cool the water.

Correction: May need a chiller if you don't have an AC unit in the room. You most likely can mix them together since they are from the same temperature zone.

You most likely wont see local native marine hermits in a local fish store. Typically the common ones are blue legged hermits, red legged hermits, and some of the larger varieties like the thin striped hermit.

On top of that you'd of course want a well established saltwater tank. To give an example it took me roughly $1,000 to run a 10 gallon reef tank. And I got my tank, stand, and rock for free.

I wouldn't mix marine hermits. Even just my blue legs were notorious for shell fighting and being little buttheads even with tons of shells littered across the sandbed.

Also if you do have corals.. They will relocate them. Or bury them in a sand. Or step all over them till they die. They're awesome but best kept in a fish only tank IMO
