Wow, I spaced badly when looking at the tank dimensions! The two mat idea sounds good to me! I have mine on a thermostat, but I know most people don't bother with them for crabbies.

Which thermostat do you like? Might be a better way to go, if it works for small tanks.

I use the Zilla thermostat. I've seen occasional bad reviews for it, but I haven't actually known anyone who's ever had an issue with them (they're used by a lot of people on my hedgehog forum) and I've never had a problem with mine. The only minor thing is that the numbers don't seem to match up well with what the thermostat will keep the temp at, so I just ignore them & fiddle with the dial until it's set at what I want. If you get the 1000w - http://www.amazon.com/Zilla-11939-Tempe ... B002CZ0J3E - it has 3 outlets so you can plug multiple pads into it. :)

I have this one for my corn snake and it works great! No problems so far but like you said, you definitely can't go by the numbers and instead need to fiddle with it until you get it where you want it.

Thanks for your reply, but my crabs died from Post Purchase Syndrome :( . I will be getting four new crabs and house them in a 20g tank. :D (I will buy a bigger heating mat.)

I'm sorry your crabs passed Image
If you decide to get more, it may be a good idea to make sure the tank is set up according to suggested care guides and be able to maintain the proper temperatures consistently before adding the crabs. If you were never able to get their temps up, it is very likely that they passed from being too cold as well as PPS. I'm sorry for your loss.

I will probably get a new thermometer/hydrometer because idk if this one will be accurate for my 20g tank. Image

You can calibrate it following the instructions here:

And use it until you are able to get a digital one.

I tried that and it was a few degrees off but there's no hole on the back to make any changes. :| Image

Did you leave it in the bag overnight? Is there a small screw on the back where the hands of the gauge are held in that you can adjust with a tiny screwdriver or pocket knife or steak knife? If not you can just make a note to self that "hey when this gauge says 78% it's really 5% off so it is actually 83%" or whatever.

Yes, I did leave it in the container with the salt overnight, but i'll be getting a new (hopefully digital) thermometer/hydrometer at Walmart so that should solve the prob.

You'll still want to calibrate the digital one...I got a fancy pants new digital combo unit and it's the same 3 degrees off that my old analog one was
