What is your favorite type of dog?

Post by Guest » Tue Jun 07, 2005 7:44 am

Sorry kittycaller, it took us a while to settle on the name but we finally decided to call her Gracie. That was after a week of calling her Ladybird, like on King Of The Hill. I still like Ladybird better but Gracie is a little less cartoony. Anyway she seems to like it as she is learning it pretty quickly. She can sit, stay, come, and fetch now but isn't quite getting the hang of LIE DOWN. She's great on the leash too now and will heel off the leash in the yard, but I'm not going to try that one out of the yard for quite a while yet! So far she's working out great, especially for a dog that came from the pound. She has a great personality and seems to be a quick learner. I can't wait to give that stinker a bath. I had to wait until her spay incision healed and it looks all done now. Maybe I'll put her in the tub tonight. I sure would like to pet her without my hand stinking. I make her watch The Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic channel with me. I think it may be sinking in.

Mutts are the most lovable, loyal dogs...Well, that's been my experience anyway. My baby, Micah, is a dalmation-mix...He's the love of my life. I've always said that if I got a "pure-bred" dog that it would be a hairless chinese crested...But, I've priced them & I just don't think I'll ever spend $1500 on a dog when there are so many babies that need good homes.

I'm more of a cat person. I grew up with German Shepherds, which I like really well. (Never heard of a Shiloh Shepherd before, Willow. I'll have to ask my dad about that.) I like big dogs. If I was going to get a dog, I would like a Rottweiler or Mastiff. Maybe a Doberman or Greyhound. My mom currently has a standard poodle, which is really a smart, sweet dog. My fiance would like to get a Lab or a Corgi. I'd be more O.K. with a Corgi than a Lab. Then again, my cats have always come from an animal shelter. If I ever get a dog, why wouldn't I go that way and end up with a lovable mutt?

Unlike cats, about 50% of dogs in animal shelters are purebred. At the Sioux Falls Humane Society, nearly all the dogs are pure Labs or Lab mixes. But a lot of shelters have automatic kill policies in effect for "aggressive" breeds like Pits or Rotts, sometimes even Mastiffs, so it might be hard to get one of those from a regular shelter--maybe a specific breed rescue. There are some rescue agencies for retired racing greyhounds--I've heard they make great pets. But the point is, if you want a purebred, you can still adopt and save a life.

Yep! In fact, the Sioux Falls Humane Society is where I got my purebred Basset Hound. (And have been regretting it ever since. LOL *joking*) Seriously, a Humane Society is an excellent place to look for a dog, especially a puppy. Often the dog is there through no fault of its' own. Of course there can be some bad apples. But buying dogs from a breeder can oftentimes be much worse, especially from "puppy mills" who just breed purebreds for cash, not for love of the animal. It has been my experience that a dog from such an environment is much MORE likely to develop serious health and/or mental issues than a rescued one. And when it comes right down to it, plain mutts are sometimes the best darn dogs anyways. My mother had a Chihuahua/Miniature Schnauzer mutt that lived for twenty years.

I vote mutts too. An alternative to shelters for anyone interested is to adopt from someone who fosters pets. They can find out a lot about a dog and let you know if they think you and your family would be compatable. After what happened with Gigi, I think that might be the way I go next time. Let someone else determine beforehand if the dog gets along well with kids.

great pics. As for your older rottie if you can get active care dog food made by breeders choice it would help her ALOT it is for dogs with hip, Joint, arthritis problems it has glucosomine chondriton in it three time more then other dog foods have. not to mention it is all natural and human grade indredents no corn or fillers of any kind. if you would like more information on this food and other breeders choice foods go to http://www.breederschoicefoods.com if you don't want to switch foods then try the treats or you can even buy the glucosomine from the drug store and give her that. we did that with our rottie before we lost her and she did wonderfully on it it got her and extra two years then she developed cancer really bad and we lost her:'( good luck and let me know if my suggestions helpat all.
