Had to go to the hospital with my mother last night.

Post by Crabber85 » Mon Mar 30, 2015 7:41 am

She started hurting on her left side last night about six o'clock and the pain was so intense that she couldn't take it, she passed out on me twice while we waited for my sister to come take her to the hospital, I know what your thinking why didn't I just call 911 well I tried and she refused to let me stating that she couldn't afford to pay for the ambulance ride, so my sister rushes home picks mom up and we all rush off to the hospital. We were there from about seven to nearly midnight because they didn't have any exam rooms open they put on a bed in the emergency room hallway and started working with her there to try to get the pain eased off which took morphine and toradol to take the edge off. They then finally get her into an exam room and an RN comes and does another assessment to find out whats going on, then the ER doctor orders a CT of mom's left side try to see whats going on.After about an hour they finally get the test results back on her blood and the pictures back from the CT and they discovered she was in the process of passing *multiple* kidney stones and had a bladder infection from the kidney stones. They gave her an anti-inflammatory to help with the kidney stones and an anti-biotic for the infection. We sat at the hospital until just after midnight then they released her she is out of work for the entire week and the ER doctor wants her to go see a urologist this week to do a follow because she is diabetic and diabetics tend to have problems with their kidneys so he wants a full run up done on her through the specialist. As most of you know I lost my dad around this time last year to kidney cancer so last night was a pretty traumatic experience because my brother, sister and I don't want to loose our mother and the way the ER doctor was delaying a prognosis it had us worried but once we found out it was a bit easier to deal with, she's in bed now been there most of the day in mild pain due to the pain meds she's on but you can tell she doesn't feel well at all.

No fun with that crud.. I walked around a week w kidney stones and bladder infection before I went to the Dr. I could barely walk. I had passed the stone or stones by then but had bladder infection. I thought I just had a really bad back ache then side ace chalking it up to fibro.

I'm glad she is doing better. Hopefully after they pass and she gets over the infection she'll feel a lot better.Just have her think about the pain everytime she wants to get a soda and I bet that makes it a little easier to quit drinking soda, though I do know how hard it is to quit.

@jenok, her DON(Direct of Nursing)at the nursing home she works at has forbidden her to drink any kind of soft drink and has her on a lemonade regimen apparently the acid in the lemonade is good for dissolving small kidney stones. She has only had water and lemonade to drink over the last few days and has stuck with her new drink regimen like a trooper.

@jenok, the hospital called her yesterday to tell her that they had to call her in another antibiotic because the finally got the test results back and she has a strep infection in her kidneys so she is still feeling pretty bad, we had to go to the pharmacy today to pick up the prescription.

I've heard of strep throat but not a strep infection in the kidneys. Is her new meds working better?

@jenok, its the same virus and it can move into any organ in the body if left untreated but tends towards the kidneys and can cause renal failure and subsequently death and yes it has responded to the new anti-biotic pretty well so she is feeling better.
