Recommended beta fish site?

Post by beka » Thu Dec 26, 2013 11:17 pm

I'm adopting a beta today from a sad environment and I'd love to put the same great care into him as we have into our crabs. I found some general information but wondered if anyone here could recommend a beta site that they love or a forum? ThanksBeka

Tropical fish forums is a nice place. I'm an active member there too and they can give very specific care advices for bettas I also keep a 3-year old male betta so you can feel free to ask me anytime if you're online here

Myaquariumclub is another great forum. There are lots of members, myself included, that keep bettas and even a specific section for bettas. There are also lots of great blogs on them, such as Bonnies blog for caring for bettas rescued from bad conditions http://www.myaquariumclub.com/...tta-rescue-3826.html

@beka, I like Better-Bettas.com and Aquariumguys.com they have a lot of good info on betta care and disease treatments. When a betta has been in bad conditions it goes through a process similar to hermitcrabs it developes a few distinct stress related symptoms which includes lowered immune system, faded coloration, ich, gill flukes, dropsy and fin and tail rot.The reason this fish is so prone to developing these infections and then subsequently dieing is as simple as dirty water. Most stores use methyl blue to treat the water to keep these infections at bay which doesn't necessarily mean the fish will be any less stressed just less likely to develop an infection. There are a lot of stores which simply do not treat the water and let it set for two weeks or more before changing it which combined with a cold water temp leads to all sorts of viral and bacterial issues not to mention the build up of ammonia.By the time we get these fish they have been through so much abuse and neglect that they often times either die right away or a few days later. After the fish has been exposed to these horrible conditions it usually ends up having its already short lifespan reduced to mere months as the gills have been irreversably damaged by the bacteria and ammonia that have been allowed to repeatedly build up in the water which is unfortunate to say the least.I have owned several bettas all from bad conditions in the past and the longest lived was a mere six months so be prepared if the little one simply doesn't make it as most dont.
