Safe commercial food

Post by ILoveHermies » Wed Jul 24, 2013 8:10 am

I was wondering if my hermit crab food was safe; I have the Zoo Med hermit crab food as well as the All Living Things hermit crab food. I know that the All Living Things food is safe but I'm not sure about the Zoo Med food

Safe commercial food

I was told the Zoo Med wasn't safe, so I got rid of mine and got the HBH Variety Bites.

Safe commercial food

Zoomed has one or more ingredients that are not safe for hermit crabs.I did not see anything in the All Living Things that was bad but I don't always remember the bad stuff.I would also recommend using our safe food list and feeding fresh foods in addition to commercial foods. Some have been happy using baby food. Variety is key here for good health.

The All Things Living brand is safe though not the best and the Zoo-Med brand has copper sulfate in it as well as a couple other questionable ingredients so it was determined to be unsafe.

I try to switch it up as much as possible. My little guys aren't too big on fresh food, except they do really like dried coconut. I'm trying to find fresh foods that they do like, but I'm going out of town so I needed to know if the dry foods I had were safe for them. Luckily my crabbies didn't like the Zoo Med food the 2 times I gave it to them. I remember someone else asked about the All Living Things food last week (on LHC) and an expert crabber (I can't remember who) said it was OK. The powdered treat I got from them only had coconut, strawberry and honey in it. I was impressed with that being from a store.

You can't always tell when your hermit crabs are eating. I think you need to stop feeding the commercial food because it might have something in it to make them go to it over fresh food. Like McDonalds you know? A person will eat a french fry over a salad any day but that doesn't mean it's healthy!! If I were you I would not feed any commercially prepared food except maybe once per week and give them all fresh food the rest of the time. Just make sure to give them a protein every day.

I gave them fresh food for about a week and a half and it remained untouched, I'm thinking they didn't like the foods I gave them so when I get back I'm going to try different foods
