Its a sad day in the Star Trek universe, RIP Lenard Nimoy.
True story, always wanted to tell it in detail.I was able to meet Lenard Nimoy when I was a kid. This was before all the comic-con/Star Trek craze, early 70’s. It was at a car show in Denver where he was an added attraction. I remember the radio publicity of his pending appearance and imagined the crowd he would draw. It was I think, Saturday afternoon, and the car show was buzzing, I was roaming around, looking at the hotrods when I spotted him arriving at the platform where he was to make his appearance. There he was, Spock himself, but nobody was showing any interest. I guess the PA announcement of his showing wasn’t yet made but I always imagined he was right on time. He looked frustrated, and annoyed and was trying to appear busy. I watched him for a minute wanting to go talk to him when some older kids came up and teased him saying, “Where’s your pointy ears Spock?” By this time he was angry (he was probably only getting a few bucks for the gig). Soon people started to gather around, and it became civil. He was talking about the Star Trek show, and co-stars, the whole bit. It was cool, I was right up front wondering what I could ask him. I got his attention, shook his hand, and nervously asked... “How do they do the transporter thing?”, wanting to know how the effect was done. My dad was a collage professor, taught audio/video media and I was familiar with some things. I must have even hoped Spock would elaborate on the science (fiction) that it was all based on, it was a great question, very logical. I guess I was years ahead of my time, because he just looked at me and said, “It’s not real.” So then I said, “I know, but how is it done?”, meaning the visual special effects and/or quasi-science fictional basis of a interstellar molecular transporter. And Mr Nimoy just said = “Kid, it’s not real, it’s just a TV show.”, and he moved on. Years later, I saw Lenard in a TV interview. He talked about how people were really into the show, followed it closely. That they even thought that the whole Star Trek thing was for real, that people actually believed the show was real life. He laughed as he was saying this. I wonder if others had trouble asking him questions too, or if it as just me he was talking about.

@Herman Coen, that's really cool you got to meet him and talk to him, back then when the main Trek actors were going out doing local speak and greets they didn't have much of a choice it was something the network who owned them made them do.I've met John Schneider from Dukes of Hazard and Smallville, he was doing a promotion for a movie based on the General Lee and he showed up at the local theater in the car pulled it right up to the front doors got out and started talking to people it was so awesome he is a very friendly guy and the funny thing is my dad made friends with him when he was filming Dukes of Hazard with Tom Wappat, the show was filmed all around my home town, we even still have the building that was used for Boss Hogs hangout it got converted into a small town church years ago but they still have a sign up letting fans of the show know that yes this was in deed the Boars Nest.lolI met Alan Autry who played Bubba on Heat of the Night and yes they filmed that show here in town as well, he was coming out of a local restaurant and ended up coming over to speak to me I was like five or six and he signed a napkin for me which I still have.lolMy sister has talked to the two main guys on Vampire Diaries Ian Somerhalder(Damon)and Paul Wesley(Stefan) and yes they have been filming that show here since it first started, she saw them walking up the street and they stopped and talked for a few minutes.Paul and Nina Dobrev(Elena)were dating and had bought a place in Conyers which is the next town over so they lived here for almost two years they said they liked the small town feeling of the place they could go where they wanted and didn't have to worry about being mobbed. It's nothing to go into town or over to Conyers and see the filming crews for either Vampire diaries or the prequel the Originals its actually pretty cool.Rob Zombie recently filmed a re-boot for the Halloween movies and used our town square and a few of our historical buildings, one of my friends who owned the local mattress store actually got to talk with him because he came in to buy some mattresses for the stunt guys to use and then ended up offering my friend a part in the movie which he chickened out and didn't accept. lolDakota Fanning is actually from Conyers she comes back regularly to visit her family and I'm friends with one of her cousins he has been trying to set it up so that we can meet her but her schedule is so hectic that its hard getting any kind of plans made.My brother went to school with him for years so he's been a friend of the family for a long time. I've always wanted to meet Lenard Nimoy but never got the chance, he was supposed to be at Dragon Con in Atlanta this year as well as Adam West and a few others but I couldn't afford the $400 ticket price to get in and now he wont be making it either....
