Question??? Drinking water dish...

Post by cRABB3R&w[]FE » Sun Jul 19, 2015 3:50 pm

I have a beautiful Geode, and i was wondering if there would be any problem using it for a freshwater dish?

It is similar to this

I will take an actual picture when i get home but what do you all think?

How deep is it? And how big is your largest crab? It'd make a very pretty water dish, but the water dishes need to be deep enough for your largest crab to submerge so they can switch out water as needed.

this would be an additional water dish to their already large enough dish.

and the geode in the picture is a fake one made out of pottery the one I have is a real rock lol

I was just wondering if there was a chance for bad minerals from it or something?

The only thing I would worry about is cleaning it - if they drag in substrate/moss/whatever it may be hard to get out of all the nooks and crannies.

It would make an awesome decoration at the very least, though!

I would say no - the crystals that formed are from water soluble minerals, which means in water they'll start to dissolve again and some of what makes the pretty colors are heavy metals and non-edible elements.

I used it for a couple days before I read wodes comment, it wouldn't have worked even if I decided to keep it. Those rocks are just like seashells, and once completely saturated water just seeps through it slowly over time. I thought the crabs were crazy thirsty but really it was just the rock leaking the water into the media
