Should I Dig?

Post by bellag33 » Sun Sep 27, 2015 3:46 pm

Hi all, first of all I am happy that the HCA is back up and running so I can ask a couple quick questions! While the forum was down, I discovered one of my crabs at the top of the tank almost lifting up the lid and escaping. I gently placed her back on the substrate and removed the climbing wall that I had on the side of the tank because that was the only way that she could've gotten up there. However, I haven't seen one of my other crabs for about 2 months and now I'm not sure if it escaped or is under the substrate. Out of the 6 crabs in the tank, I know where four of them are: 3 are above the substrate and I can see one underneath from the side of the tank. Should I dig around to check if the other 2 are in there?

No, never, ever dig up a ppossibly molting crab. It has not been long enough, and you could likely kill them if they are molting.

Another thing, you might want to buy tank lid clips to keep the lid secure, and then you could put the wall back in.

Good luck! :)

Thank you! I will give it a little more time and maybe check around my house for a possibly escaped crab.

One of my small crabs stayed under for 3 months. It was a long wait and I worried the entire time, but it was so worth it when she popped up looking magnificently bright red :
