Airstone placement?

Post by amart24 » Wed Oct 07, 2015 4:24 pm

Where is the optimal place to put a small cylinder airstone? I have large tupperware as my pools right now, about 6 inches deep.

Currently I just let the airstone hang in there, about 2 inches down. The bottom of the pools are aquarium gravel, should it be buried under that?

Hanging in the pools is fine. Mine pull them up and play on them so it is unlikely that they will stay buried under gravel.

Perfect! I finally got my ramps installed, plastic craft mesh.

However, one fell in and for the life of him couldnt figure out how to use it. Eventually took him out my self after 30 minutes

They can be submerged for a couple of hours. They have been observed just sitting on the bottom of pools.

When I first added bubblers to the pools, Mr Pinch went into the FW, totally submerged and sat there for about 30 minutes. I saw him go in and was delighted but, when I passed by 30 minutes later and saw him in the same spot, I totally freaked out, plucked him out of the pool and popped him onto the substrate. As soon as I put him down, he headed right back into the pool, submerged again right by the bubbler and stayed for about an hour. Guess he told me off alright  ! Now when one of the guys sinks into a pool for a nice relaxing soak, I'm just pleased that they're enjoying the water.

He fell in again and sat on the bubbler for ten minutes, hilarious. they still cant get a grasp of the ramps though, hoping they do soon.

The other day I redid my pools while I was putting my tank back together. I keep cycled, filtered pools so it was a huge job. Finally I went to redo the ramps and someone moved the cover I had over the empty pools. I have special gravel at the bottom of my pools that help with cycling so I had to get the ramps back in before filling them. Someone fell into the sw pool that had nothing but moist gravel in it. They decided it wasn't worth the effort and just stayed there on their back inside their shell. Moving him to put the ramp in and fill with water was awkward. I think it is probably a good thing I don't speak hermit crab. I am sure the thinks coming from his mouth would not have been pretty.

In addition to the plastic mesh ramps, I have small plastic weighted-bottom aquarium plants in both pools, a larger plastic plant in the gap between the two pools and a small piece of fish net hanging behind the pools against the glass. All of those items really help the guys get in/out 'cause, to be honest, only Big Enzo uses the ramps regularly (unless he's falling in from the overhanging vines  ).

I like the fish net idea, might add that this weekend.
