Halloween crabs with hermit crabs?

Post by Shadow&Skye » Sat Oct 31, 2015 12:49 pm

Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone had experience with halloween crabs (The land ones that are often confused with moon crabs) and hermit crabs living together? I was researching and people have said they have kept them together, since they do require the same care, except the plant based diet of the halloween crab. My halloween crabs were not very happy in a separate tank, they were pretty sluggish and it was a struggle to keep up the humidity. So I decided to move them with my hermit crabs, that have a 40 gallon breeder and glass lid to keep in humidity. It has been a day since they are together, and no problems have taken place. The halloween crabs do seem much happier though. Has anyone else kept them together?

I don't know much about Halloween crabs but I did a quick search on this forum and found a few posts suggesting it's not a good idea. There's worry about how the two will interact. If you haven't already, search "Halloween" and browse through the results.

Personally, the only other critters I recommend trying to house with land hermit crabs are springtails and isopods. Anything else is just not worth the risk, imo. Best to provide them with their own space with proper conditions. If you've managed to get your crabitat conditions right, I'm sure setting up a separate Halloween crab tank will be just as easy for you. ;)

They are omnivores like hermits. The biggest risk is of them eating each other - if they come across a molter or a weak crab they'll take full advantage of the situation, regardless of species.

Hey! I looked them up and maybe suggesting HCA to research them as a new type of hermit crab! Agree?

Halloween crabs are not a species of hermit crab. However you are able to get some information on this site. :) there is an "other types of crabs" section.
