Glass canopy for 40g breeder?

Post by goodcreb » Mon Nov 23, 2015 9:45 pm

For the life of me, I cannot find a glass canopy for a 40g breeder ANYWHERE. My local pet stores never have them, and almost all places I look online come in two pieces (tank does not have a center brace to support two pieces), or are completely out of stock (i.e. thatpetplace; I have no idea when they will have more in stock and I can't really wait for months). My tank is technically an All Living Things terrarium, but it has the same dimensions as a standard 40g breeder: 36x18. I'm also not sure where there is a glass shop near me that I can ask to make a custom lid. I tried ordering an aqueon versa top lid from amazon, but it arrived shattered into pieces due to insufficient boxing (no padding, just a plain cardboard box). Does ANYONE know a reliable place I can get one? My current mesh lid is falling apart, so a glass lid is the only way I'll be able to keep the humidity up this winter.

You could always get plexi glass and cut it to size if you have a drummel or something. I know they sell it at Home Depot and Lowes in my area, but I never asked them if they'd cut it for me. Another thing you might want to consider is window insulation-you know the kind that looks kind of like a heavy duty plastic wrap, tape it to mesh lid and blow dry to to shrink it nice and tight and stable on the mesh lid.

Have you asked your local shop to order one in? It can be an uncommon size so they don't always have them on hand but can get them. Petco usually has some during their sales since the 40's sell well. I have a 30 breeder (same dimensions as a 40 but shorter) that came with an adoption and the thick plexi lid is completely bowed because it's too much open space for the plastic to handle. Altering your current (or a new) screen lid is your best bet. Get glass or plexi at home depot and add it on to hold in humidity. You can spray paint or use Rustoleum in a can to refinish the lid if it's rusted or flaking!

Does the terrarium have a recessed inner lip at the top? If so, measure the inner dimensions as that is where the glass lid will rest. All Living Things brand may be comparable to Aqueon as both are carried by PetSmart (Petco's tanks are manufactured by Marineland). Online vendor Doctors Foster & Smith (http://www.drsfostersmith.com) carries a variety of hinged glass lids for Marineland and Aqueon tanks so check out the website to see if one of the lids will fit. If the inner lip is 36x18, there is an Aqueon lid for $29. I ordered a Marineland lid for my Petco 29g and it fit perfectly! It was expertly packed and arrived intact.

The problem with Drs. Foster and Smith is that they only sell lids for 40g breeders with a center brace, i.e. they come in two pieces, not one like I need. I'm not sure enough in my abilities to make a DIY center brace either. I measured my tank with a tape measure, and it's definitely 36x18, just like an average 40g breeder would be. Also, if I were to modify a mesh lid, I would need to buy completely new one. I wasn't joking when I said it was falling apart; it's so completely rusted through that when my mom tried to rinse it off with a hose, it busted holes in it. I still don't know why we thought that would be a good idea.

To be honest, covering a mesh lid with window insulation would be the cheapest and easiest solution for me at the moment (it's clever too!). A new mesh lid and window insulation would almost definitely be cheaper altogether than a glass lid, and I wouldn't have to worry about it breaking every time I take it off. Thanks! :D

Make sure you have some ventilation..crabs can't get the shrink wrap..did you ask the pet store if they could order you the size lid you need? Some independent pet store owners will do it where mass chain pet stores won't or can't. I went to a private owned & they ordered me my 2 glass lids for my 55 gal. If you have the inner lip you can make your own brace by just using a long flat ruler..cut the large one down then use some glue for plastic and wood.I love my glass lids..

I've got a forty gallon breeder by Zilla and it uses a proprietary sliding lid ie the lid has a channel on each side that fits into two tracks on the top frame of the tank and as a consequence the lid would need to be replaced with a Zilla brand replacement, I have no other options due to proprietary nature of the lid.

Some of these manufacturers use proprietary lids to force the customer into having to come back to them for replacements this ensures that they get more money out of you aside from the initial cost of purchasing the tank.
