Crickets as a food
Crickets as a food
I saw crickets are on the safe food list and I have a cricket keeper but how exactly good are crickets for hermit crabs?

Dead crickets (I wouldn't put live ones in with hermits) are a good source of protein and chitin-which is what their exoskeletons are formed from.

Freeze-dried are incredibly cheaper than live and the crabs do horrible with catching live ones. If you're feeding other animals though the crabs will happily take care of the dead ones for you!

Not to sound like an advertisement, but Flukers Medley Treat turtle food with freeze dried meal worms, river shrimp and crickets are amazing. i have never seen my crabs go so crazy for a food until I gave them these bugs. Now they get then about once a week. They are a great source of protein. I buy mine from a local pet shop but you can find them on Amazon:

Re: Crickets as a food
I used to feel the same way about the Medley, but I got several jars that had been infested with live grain beetles from a couple different stores over a period of about a year. If there is a lot of dust in the bottom of the bottle or little round things (poop) you know it's a bad batch. I'm sure it doesn't affect the crabs, but for the price I thought the contamination was ridiculous!

They were hard to find for a while, I think they recalled them to fix the problem. They are back now. I just checked, none of the jars have a lot of dust on the bottom and I see no pellets. Wouldn't matter I don't think i grind most of it with a mortar and pestle anyways to mix it in with coconut and other things. Thanks though, I will make sure to look for them next time.
