HELP!!How do I keep the humidity correct in my crabitat

Post by ShadowJimmy107 » Sun Dec 06, 2015 6:49 pm

I just bought three hermit crabs and im having trouble keeping the humidity correct. The humidity goes down to 50-55 at the least (maybe lower) and 90-95 the most. I spray the tank(not the crabs) and i goes up to the 90's again.

I have a 15 gallon tank with 5 inches of sand castle consistency sand. I have a Repti Hammock with a climbing branch up to it with moss (A moss pit). And two water bowls(salt and fresh). I have a meh lid with a combination of 95% of the lid covered with aluminum foil and 100% of the lid covered with saran wrap. And im using a heat mat to heat the tank ( the temp is around 76°. I was thinking of changing to a heat lamp. The heat lamp i would be using is a 25 watt halogen bulb.
Should i do that or what? I need help. Should I not spay as much.

Have you calibrated your hygrometer to make sure it's reading correctly? The instructions are here: viewtopic.php?f=26&t=92540

Yeah, something doesn't make sense there, because with moist substrate and a good lid, you should have stable humidity.......Misting the tank won't hurt anything (I mist my substrate to keep it moist, and I mist after I put dinner on to entice them to eat) as long as you aren't of course spraying the crabs, which you seen to know. Have you tried a bubble pool, humidifier, fogger, waterfall, something like that? When I lived in the desert I needed a humidifier to keep it stable, even with the lid and moist substrate.

I have a crab that runs to me when I am spraying. He loves being sprayed. He is my favorite and a very weird little guy.

They can fail without warning so without knowing you'll only be guessing. :(

ShadowJimmy, I couldn't open the link for the 'sticker' gauge that you have, but if it is the type I am thinking of (sticker, rectangular, readings in squares, based on colour...?) they are often not able to be calibrated. I think opting for analog or digital hygrometers might be a better bet if you can't figure out what's happening with your current one.
