only plastic. They laid it on its side and put moss inside. I thought it was an ingenious way to make a moss pit. You could see inside the pit so the crabs were still somewhat on display, and at the same time they had a nice little high humidity spot to hang out. Conditions for the crabs looked pretty good there as well. So far it's the best conditions I've ever seen pet store crabs kept in.

They do spray to get the humidity up in the tanks there which is nice. However, the staff are not super great. I had words with one of the employees at that PetsMart because there was a dead crab sprawled out in the middle of the tank just laying there. There was a sign up saying there were no crabs in there and more would be coming soon. I told them that is was not OK to leave a crab laying out that way, as people would think that was normal. They don't really like having people educate them on crab care there. They get pretty snotty and bent out of shape.

Petco in Stillwater, has better conditions. They half salt and fresh water bowls (no sponges) and monitor the temp and humidity. They also have hides for them there. They were very interested to learn more about the crabs and were asking me lots of questions and what they could do better. I was super impressed! Unfortunately, the crabs at Petco are in painted shells vs. PetsMart in the natural shells. But condition wise, Petco definatley beats PetsMart in the twin cities!

I wish there were other options around here though...

I'm pretty well resigned to getting any new crabs through people who have purchased them and are now ready for them to go to a new home.
