Overcrowding
So I just set up an adoption a few days ago (marry Christmas to me ) and when I brought it home (and posted on here) I found out he's an E. And even though I have wanted one and he's adorable, I have a few concerns.
I only have a 29 gallon tank, which would be alright if he was a PP, but I've heard at least a 40 gal is recommended for Es.
And plus, he's the only E i have so a species buddy is advised.. But two Es and two PPs in a tiny 29 gallon?? When does it become overcrowding? I'm nervous about having even one E in the tank, I don't know if having two would be safe. But at the same time, I don't want him to be lonely.
Anything is better than the conditions his previous owners had him in but I don't want to stress the poor thing out and definitely don't want him harming my other crabs.
What can I do to keep him happy and prevent any unwanted incidents? Will he be okay without a species buddy and in a 29 gallon?

Re: Overcrowding
Four PPs would be happy in a 29 gallon easy. I'm one of the unlucky ones who had bad experiences with Es, and I do think they need more space. Not necessarily a 40 gallon, but I personally would never do two by themselves in anything under a 20 long. I think adding two to two hermits in a 29 might end up with problems in the long run.

that's what I was worried about. so will he be okay being the only one of his species?

Re: Overcrowding
I honestly don't know. I've had it drilled into my head since I got here that they always need a species buddy, but I never knew anyone who tried it without one. The theory that they need their own kind does make sense - they might all be hermits but they probably don't all use the same communication signals. I would prioritize the crowding issue though, I would not suggest getting another unless you think your tank and your crabs can support it.
Something to think about is that females Es are much more laid back. The troublemakers tend to be medium or bigger male Es.

I never thought about the communication, but if no one has really tried it I think I would rather take my chances with him being a little lonely than put in too many crabs and experience dug up molters and fights like many people have. I feel bad for him not having anyone to really talk to.. but I don't want any deaths. I won't get another until I can upgrade to a bigger tank.
thank you, I needed a little guidance.

Re: Overcrowding
If you're still worried about him; it might be worth for your peace of mind of adopting him out to a local crabber nearby that has a suitable home for him. :dunno: Or are you planning on upgrading soon? A cheap tote (around $10 or less for 30g or more) will be able to keep 2 PP's and 2 E's for a year or two; especially if the E's are small.
But honestly; I wish you good luck. Any option will have some flaws/advantages so I guess that just go with the one that fits the best.

Re: Overcrowding
Totes are a good idea. I may try to find a bigger one and keep just the Es there until I can get a bigger tank for everyone.
And if that still doesn't work, I will have to adopt him out. Its just hard finding someone in my area I would trust with them.
