Re: Ugh.... foster cat is fine, but our cat isn't. :(
Thank you. She went quickly and peacefully, and before she was in severe pain. She even had the yellow fluid around her heart, and just how much fluid was being retained was obvious when we carried her home after. (When the vet is surprised, it's never a good sign.) We are thinking for sure it was FIP, and there was nothing we could have done even if we had caught it sooner. I never really thought Midgie would have problems. She's always been perfect.
(FIP is a random mutation of the corona virus that most cats are infected with. They pass around the strains like a sick form of duck duck goose. 99.99 % of the time it's harmless, but rarely a strain will mutate inside a cat and kill the host. It's not contagious to other cats, though - the mutation is deadly only to that one. There are two forms - dry and wet. The dry form causes coughing and the wet form causes yellow fluid in the abdomen. Weight loss, muscle atrophy, jaundice, anemia, lethargy, dehydration and lack of appetite are symptoms of both - she had all of them. There is almost no treatment and there is no cure.)
I'm worried now about the old man Skitter - they were inseparable and he's pushing 20 now. Big changes like this at that age can be impossible....

I'm so sorry Sweet Pea! It's such a rare thing to find in cats. I've only known a few people who have had to deal with it.
A few pictures of her over the years
(With Skitter and Gracie, from a few years ago.)
(With Pudd, not long after moving here.)
