*Crab Fam*

Post by marandashermies » Thu Feb 11, 2016 9:08 am

Just wanted to share some photos of the crab clan!

I was so excited to see that someone decided to wear this shell. I never thought I would see the day! Its so refreshing to see something other than a tapestry turbo :)

This guy is one of my most active. Always causing trouble

Coral still in this crazy shell! I am fairly confident she will be in this until she absolutely HAS to move, but I don't mind because she is one of the few I can actually recognize these days!

The 55g has been super quiet. I think everyone is officially under now. There was one up, but I think she is down as well as of two nights ago. I hear a lot of scratching underground and sometimes they open little windows for me.

It has been pretty cold here in MN, they are saying tonight will be the coldest of the year. The heat in the 55g has been really hard to maintain. I have 3 heating pads on it and a heat bulb, so either my hygrometer is off, of my heat pads are failing (which is more likely). I am going to buy a new heating pad from reptilebasics hopefully this weekend.

Barnaby was the only one up in the 55g and he seemed really unhappy. He sits under the same platform all day long, in his little half hole, by himself. So last night, I decided to move him to the 125g tank. The heat and humidity are higher and there are lots of crabs up including Bella and Bubbles, two of my other straws (Boomer,Burgundy & Blaze are all under). At first I was a little worried because he seemed so confused, and I thought I totally stressed him out and made things worse, but it didn't take long before he was climbing the Cholla, drinking from the pools, climbing up in the moss pit and hanging from the rope vine on top, near the lid. He seems SOOOO much happier now.

Hopefully some of my babies come up in the 55g soon. I have some micros in there that are under- repairing lost limbs, so I hope they all come up good and healthy. Barry is also down, he was my first down and has been down about a month.

Bambi my other Straw just went down a week or so ago, so I am assuming I wont be seeing Barry or Bambi until summertime, at least.

Praying everyone is OK under there and comes up happy and healthy! Hopefully this post inspires others to post some updated pics of their crab families! I think it is safe to say, I am not the only one who LOVES seeing what everyone else's crabbies are up too :D

They are all so cute! Fantastic pics of those straw babies! I also terribly miss and worry about my buried guys. Slipknot is my fav and he's been down about two weeks now. He was my guy walking the ceiling and getting into everything, every day. One of my straws is molting, been down a month now. Ag! Clipper, Titanic, Warf-I miss you guys! :crybaby:

Such a livley bunch you have there! Always someone doing something worthy of a photoshoot!

I always have my phone on hand for crab photos haha! They trickle out around 6pm and are usually all out causing havoc by 9:30-10pm. They are usually out in the morning too, when I get up and always find them doing the funniest things. This morning the top of my filter was knocked off and floating in the pool, while one was drinking next to it and the other climbing on the net behind it. But honestly the funniest thing to me, is when I am laying on the couch and watching TV and see something falling from the sky and hear the "thunk" of the crab shell hitting the substrate/decorations. They are either pushing one another out of the moss pit or else stepping off of it and diving down. My cats always stop what they are doing and look up at the tank like "what the heck was that"? Then my daughter says, "Mom, another crab fell out of the moss", which one was it this time"? It is like its raining shells in there! :toothy2: Dive bombing crabs, left and right, crazy fellas. I think I am going to look into another moss pit, if I can find somewhere to put it that is..

Yes, these molts are hard. I am extra worried about all the Straws that are down. I am expecting them to be down for months, but I will be worried the entire time. What was your longest Straw molt Landlubber? Good luck to your babies too :luck::

Your daughter is funny. LOL

Ah, it's been a long time since I recorded straw molts (I took like a 8 year sabbatical from crabbing). I don't recall them being particularly long or having more difficult molts (never had a straw deformed or get stuck in exo) compared to other crabs, just that they often lost color no matter what I fed for several molts-but sometimes not their first. My Rose molted like a champ again and again and again (she looked super stripey for a while). What I remember is a lot of PPS loses, and an unfortunate salt water issue I had. :(

good, hopefully its not long. But my Straws are the biggest crabs I have. I haven't lost any from a molt yet, but like you, too many from PPS ;(
Awwww I hope they don't lose their coloring too much! Blaze is down and he is very vibrant. That dark, dark cherry red. Same with Barnaby who is up. It's cool to see all the shades they come in. All of mine are completely different shades. Let me know when yours comes up!!
