The hermit crab keeping hobby is a lost cause
Re: The hermit crab keeping hobby is a lost cause
When I was little, we would keep our crabs in my brother's room in a ten gallon tank, gravel and no lid. This was not optimal conditions. Many of them died and we were feeding them pellets. This was way before the Internet came along, back in the late eighties/early nineties. Now I have two crabs in a 20 gallon tank with a cork log (which they love hiding in) and a ceramic log hide which they also enjoy hiding under, cholla, moss, shells to change into, and 5 plus inches of sand and EE. My guys are not being fed pellets. They get the good stuff from the HCA's safe list and forage from Hermie's Kitchen.

I agree and disagree. I believe animals are meant to be enjoyed, both in the wild and in our homes. Abuse can occur with any animal that is captive bred or caught in the wild. I believe the problem occurs when irresponsible people join the trade out of greed and/or ignorance. This could include puppy mills, people who breed pets without knowing what they're doing, or just people who gets pets and don't take care of them. I think everyone on here is trying to do right by their pets and I don't think there's anything wrong with wanting to own hermit crabs if you choose to be responsible. They are already in the pet stores and if you seek to give them a better life, then you are rescuing them! Ignorance and greed are the problems, not the type of pets or people who enjoy them.

They may already be in pet stores, but purchasing them leads directly to more being taken from the wild. To each his own on this -seriously, I see both sides and have purchased myself in the past - but I really believe the fact that it is leading to wild animals being collected for captivity should not be glossed over or forgotten. It is not rescuing anything, it is continuing the cycle.

Wild animals should be left in the wild. They were never meant to be pets and most of them cannot and should not be domesticated.
