Emperor Scorpions - Babies 10/11
Re: I've got baby scorpions!
ok I have to say that the babies are cute but I don't think I could deal with the big ones. Have you ever been stung? I think I will stick to crabs

Re: I've got baby scorpions!
Never been stung and never planning on it. Although I am intrigued to know how bad it would be. I know, I know, I'm a weirdo.
And I usually don't have a problem with the bigger ones. Granted I've only had four adults to this point, one died soon after giving birth and I've yet to see the other two entirely out in the open... But anyways, the bigger ones don't bother me unless they are doing this:
And then I get the total heebie jeebies. Probably because they look like a spider from underneath.

That would totally freak me out. I think I'll leave the scorpions up to you. Very interesting and exciting, but SCARY! Give our little mama a hug from me! Congrats!

Re: I've got baby scorpions!
I think I saw dad last night!! Whichever scorp was out and walking around was about half the mass of the wild momma, so I'm hoping that means it was dad. (Females tend to be bigger.) He was doing the baby wiggle dance - they sort of vibrate as they move, I'm assuming to communicate with the little ones that everything is okay - and there was a teeny one following him around. Won't know for sure it is him unless there is a huge difference in size between Castra and Pollux, or if I get lucky see them both together. Been checking several times every night after dark, even using red flashlight to look into the hides.

Re: I've got baby scorpions!
Sudden realization that after the new momma gives birth, the scorps will probably outnumber the hermit crabs...

Re: I've got baby scorpions!
You know I was just thinking that I could never have one because they look too much like spiders to me and I absolutely hate spiders but I then I felt bad for thinking that and then you said it so I am glad that I am not the only one that gets the eebie jeebies from it Honestly hermit crabs creeped me out a little at first too because when they lean all they way out of their shell the kinda look like spiders. Now they're just cute
Some days I just have a little weirdness running through my blood :)

Re: I've got baby scorpions!
I have severe arachnophobia - which the hermit crabs have helped to slowly cure over the years. Before the crabs I was getting really weird around all bugs. But the hermits led to fiddlers, which led to roaches, which led to the scorps, and now I have a spider that came in with the crickets upstairs in a container that I have no idea what to do with, but that I have no urge to kill anymore. (I may have to if she's not native and not special enough for someone to want the babies, since she is now sitting on an egg case. That thing that Rocky said about being an invert love doctor is apparently true. *facepalm* )
And yes, I'm now truly looking into getting a tarantula. It's mainly a matter of cost and space that is keeping me from doing it. (I could have if the frog hadn't shown up and took that empty tank. ) I'm just not sure of the species I ultimately want as anything with skinny legs makes my skin crawl. I would need a big hairy one that looked fluffy and erm... cute, I think, to be able to deal with it on a daily basis. I may just end up trying to adopt and adult female something just to get my feet wet with them as those are the ones that scare me the least.
Oh, and I could never tell my mom about it. She would never walk in the house if she knew I had one. I'm surprised she's okay around the hermits, honestly. Much worse fear then I have!

Dear Wode,
Please stop making me want pets I previously had no interest in.
Thanks,
Sugar
The only thing saving me now is my complete refusal to own any pet that requires crickets as feeders.

Re: I've got baby scorpions!
I know this is an old post, but my gosh, the baby scorpions EEEEEe!!!! They are so ADORABLE!! I have been smiling at them this whole time, they are perfect. I've never understood that phrase "I wish they could stay a kitten forever" that people use for cat, or the like with dogs. But when I saw the scorpions, I just wished that I could have a tiny baby scorpion to carefully tend to, who would dart and hide from me, forever. My gosh, you are just such a great animal mother.
Love love love the baby scorpion pictures. I'd love to know how everyone is doing now?
