Is this safe? Wood reptile hide...

Post by soilentgringa » Fri Feb 20, 2015 9:59 pm

Last night we adopted 4 more PP's locally.

In addition to the crabs, we were given a reptile half log hide. It is not cork and I tried looking up on Petco and Petsmart's websites, but they do not list what kind of wood it is-just that it's real wood. Well duh, I could tell that it was real wood. :x

Are these crab safe?

If it's the one I'm thinking of, I had one and it turned out to be pine. Plus it molded quickly and was more trouble than it was worth so I tossed it.
Crabbing since July 2014! 75 gallon with 12 Purple Pinchers.

Pine is okay to use in small amounts, and we've had many members over the years use the half-log hides with success.

That's good to know, Wode! I just got tired of mine because of the mold, and then I dropped and broke it so that was the end of that.

I just saw this! That's good to know! I definitely do not want to give anyone false information so now I need to go edit a previous comment.

Mine grew mold very quickly too! The wood turned green and fuzzy, the wood got soft and 'squishy' from the warm and humid tank, :p
oh and 'mushroom-y' things were growing on it.. ew..

I have one in my 75 since I set it up last May. No problems with it but the crabs by far prefer the cork round.
