How much should you mist?

Post by Matt » Thu Jul 02, 2015 7:29 pm

I mist 1-2 times a day and the humidity is always at 85%. The spraying of water creates water residue on the inside glass of the tank. Is there a less messy way to keep humidity up?

What sort of lid do you have? Have you read this article on humidity? It talks about ways to maintain humidity.

I have a humidifier piped into one of my crabitats and love it (though if you go that route you may also want to look into a false bottom). The plan is to get one for the other too, it just keeps getting pushed back.

Misting can be a pain! There are several options for keeping humidity up - air stones in the water dishes, a moss pit, a humidifier (DIY or store bought and modified a bit). Air stones and a moss pit are probably the easiest/cheapest route, but personally I never had much luck with them. A DIY humidifier tutorial can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=39&t=26260

What kind of lid does your tank have? Glass or mesh? If it's mesh, make sure most of it's covered to seal in the humidity. Unfortunately, most of the time you'll probably still have condensation buildup on your glass; I just wipe mine down once a day or so and try to ignore it.

What worked for me was a Crane drop humidifier with a hose running from the top of it into my tank. Cost me about $45 per tank so it isn't super cheap, and like Calla said you'll probably want to look into a false bottom.

 Meg. I'm too lazy and just linked to the article with all that info rather than type it all out again.

What about to keep the moss moist? The humidity in my tank is pretty high, but the moss is pretty much constantly drying out.

I keep my moss dry now for less maintenance, but before that I kept a spray bottle handy and would soak it every few nights. Still hand-cramping but not as bad as misting an entire tank.

I mist twice a day or whenever the humidity dips down. I have a wire lid on a glass tank and so the humidity stays in, I put a towel on the lid. I hope it helped! :)

White vinegar is safe to use around the hermits and will take the buildup off the glass.
