Salt water salinity level?
Salt water salinity level?
I did 8 Tablespoons of instant ocean in one gallon of spring water. The result came to 1021 in Gravity. Is this okay? It seems very salty but it's the same as the ocean I guess? What do you guys try to keep gravity and salinity at?
2 Purple Pinchers and 2 Ecuadorians in a 20g long.

I read somewhere, not even sure if it was this forum, that Instant Ocean mixes up very consistently to what it is "supposed to", when mixed half a cup per gallon of water. Which my tired brain thinks is the same as 8 tablespoons. That is probably why it's a popular brand for crabbers. I am not certain of the actual numbers, and what is right, but CallaLily might know.

It is 1/2C to 1 gal water and honestly since the crabs mix their shell water with fresh and salt as they deem necessary, I don't worry about specific gravity or salinity. If you were attempting to raise zoea that would be a concern probably. 8 tbsp = 1/2 C

1.021 to 1.028 for hermits.
1.024 is pretty much considered 'standard' in saltwater aquariums, but the oceans themselves vary in salinity in different locations. A little less around rivers, a little more when tide pools evaporate, etc.

Re: Salt water salinity level?
I have a similar question about instant ocean and the specific gravity, it always seems to come out on the high side for me, I mix 4 Tbs (1/4 cup) to 1/2 gallon poland spring water, and it seems to come out near the 1.028-1.030 range.
I was worried this was too high for the crabs, but the previous post makes it seem like that's ok. Is that the true? As high as 1.028 SG is ok for their salt water bath?

It's okay, but it is on the high side. Since you know it runs a little strong, you can always cut back slightly on the salt (3 3/4 TBPS) or add a ploop more water if you're concerned.
