molting near heat source

Post by metfan » Tue Jul 14, 2015 6:37 am

I have 2 crabs down. I spotted one this morning down right next to the side heat source. This has me worried so I turned the heater off. Does this sound like a good thing to do? I live in upstate NY and it is very hot and humid now. Do you think he needs the heat or could it burn him/her?

If it was on when he dug down he's probably just fine. He may even move. The trouble with a UTH that dips below the substrate line is that it can dry out that area of substrate. You just have to check on the consistency often to make sure it remains moist enough to hold tunnels. Whether or not you should/can keep it off depends on the temperature of your crabitat without it.
