Last resort for tank connecting
Ok, well the idea I was going to use isn't really going to work... I WAS going to have a length of flexi drain pipe connect the two tanks by going out the top of both, but I think that will be too far for the crabs to "crawl" I think I might have to have someone cut a hole in the side of each tank... then just use a very short length of pipe to cennect them.Where would I go to have this done? I figure I need a 3-4" hole. I plan to mount a fixture on each hole so I can cap them off if I decide later to disconnect the tanks.Any ideas?

I think you'll find having those holes drilledwill be pricey. Don't underestimate a crabsability and willingness to explore and travel. If there's a way out of the tank, most crabswill find it,and would travel through many feetof this tube.

I also think it's too soon to give up on the idea of connecting via the tops of the tanks. AND... I think it would be cheaper, probably easier too. Put the tanks end to end, and connect so that there is only a short distance from one tank to the other... I definitely think they will climb it and explore it if you give them an appropriate climbing surface to grip. Its a great idea.... Im trying to think of how I could do it too!! lol... if I only had the room for another tank.

I think connecting them with flexible pipe would work. If you decide you just gotta get holes cut in each one, call an auto window repair place, and ask them how much they'd charge if you brought the tanks to them. It's possible, tho not likely that they'd cut them free for you if you went to them. Doesn't take any special tools, just a glass cutter and the knowledge of how to use it.

Keep in mind most aquariums are tempered glassand usually have a sticker stating "do not drill"Also, it might be a good idea to stick with FDAapproved plastics on the flex hose. Polyetheylene, and polyvinylchloride are a couple of examples. Agood rule of thumb is, if it has no odor it should beOK

Just a thought. If you have the tanks side by side or even back to back and you have a 2nd level in each tank then maybe try this: Use a PVC pipe elbow so that the pipe "clips" over the sides of the two tanks just above the 2nd levels. Once you have the fit right then wrap the pipe with string, not cotton, so that they can grip the inside of the pipe and "walk" on over. I think a fat brade having down onto the 2nd level would invite them to climb on in.

My Hubby connected his two tanks together plus added a tube to it. All he did was turn one tank on it's side then added plexi glass to close the side of it, then cut a hole in the plexi glass. Here is a link to the pic. wow, love 4 crabs, your set up is fantastic. How do you manage to keep all the levels right? i always worry with my tanks on their sides that they will crack. someone once told me that the kind i have have been known to crack when put diagonal or on their sides.

Thank you and I'll tell him It is a fogger, he can't just put a fogger in his Crabitat he has to modify it, lol if you think that's cool look at his Custom 54 Dodge Truck, all hand done by Him.http://community.webshots.com/user/magu ... 69catalina, that's my Hubby's tank but I think that he just used some plastic trim stuff to keep every thing in place. He is very crafty with his hands Sandra
