My theory of chirping as learned behavior
I've long speculated about whether or not chirping is something that crabs learn to do from other crabs. I've been watching Bean (a female Ecuadorian, my "chirpiest" group, typically) to see if I could get any insight from her.Bean isn't a big fan of being held, much like her big sisters, but she never chirped like they did, just pinched and ran away. In fact, one time, I literally scared the pants off her: she streaked and ran, and left me holding her shell. More recently, though, Bean has discovered her voice, and she has quite the voice for a little thing: she's even louder than her big sisters! And the patterns of her chirp sounds sound exactly like Triumph's on top of that.So....there's some food for thought.
