Impressed With Crabs In Meijer's Store

Post by motley crew » Sun Nov 06, 2005 1:31 am

It was my b-day recently and my niece wanted to get me something nice and differnt from anybody else so she got me another hermie (you see nobody in my family cares for my little guys all that much but she just cares for me)so anyway I wasn't home when she came over but she stays with me all time so she just gets in when she wants in.Not knowing any better she just put him in the main tank and is so mad because when he looked around a bit he just dug under and she never got to show him to me I'm alittle worried because I never got to give him a dip in the stress coat or at least a little salt water. What shocked me was the paper that meijer gave her it was a care sheet with a lot of info on the RIGHT care I mean it about everything.Housing- best is a glass aquarium w/lid.Temp-75%to 80% with a high humidity to match. In this they talk about salt water and declor on how it is a must to have and say the right salt water. They go on to say things about age and molting also differnt foods that are not comercial and how they should be with others .The only thing I didn't like was about the painted shells they said you can purchase those there and they are all over or if you had too you could use one you found at the beach but other than that the whole thing really was just shocking.I have never bought a crab from meijer there tanks just look scary well by my house anyway but renee my niece said the one she got it from looked like my tank sorry its so long but I was just so impressed I had to share the story with all of you

Maybe you could take that caresheet to Meijer's and use their own advice against them by comparing their tank conditions with the caresheet. It worked with Petco before they started taking decent care of their hermies.

I hope GSnickelgrove will see this thread. A while back she was working pretty hard on getting through to them. I don't know anything about them personally, but others have posted pics that show nothing short of horrendous conditions. Such bad environments that any little improvement would be a good one so this is especially good news. I know some of us have tried and tried to get stores like this one to do better, I know I have, and it feels like we get no where no matter what we do, but this gives renewed hope that those efforts will eventually pay off. Thanks for letting us know.

NewCrabber,What if each time we come across horrendous conditions for a business that has a website, we post the url (well actually their email address if they list one) and ALL send them an email. There's strength in numbers. They can ignore one or two people and think the majority are content with conditions but if they got mail in volume saying otherwise (they don't know we're not local to the store), they might make some changes.

It's an idea that certainly can't hurt, Crabby Abby. What we have going for us is that we are only one of many online communities who are dedicated crabbers from all over the US where stories of bad conditions in pet stores and others spread like wild fire. I have two suggestions -- first, that it would be best to keep our emotions out of any correspondence, as difficult as that can be at times. Especially because it is easy to become frustrated making attempt after attempt with no results. We have a much better chance of being heard if we display our knowledge, dedication and intelligence rather than coming off as a bunch of fanatics. We also have to be realistic in our requests/advice for a retailer.Second, since our community would be brought to their attention, it would be wise, for the sake of LHC, to keep any slanderous remarks when referring to a retailer by name, off the forum. We could always use code names, it wouldn't be the first time.

Ground rules are good. Wise idea.My passion for all living creatures sometimes gets the best of me and undermines my efforts so that was a worthwhile reminder. We all need to use caution in the area of remarks anyway, for legal reasons. Especially those printed for public viewing. We needn't identify ourselves as being associated with any website though. An advocate is an advocate whether they have the backing of others or they stand alone.*edited* Actually, in rethinking that, we may have more credibility as members of such a community, but we needn't identify which one.
