Safe Yarns?

Post by mosher3 » Sat Oct 11, 2008 8:51 am

Are there certain yarns that are safe for hermies? I want to knit a deal to weave in and out of a basket I put in their crabitat.

Hemp is the best choice, although regular yarn isn't a terrible one. Hemp doesn't have to be organic. It isn't treated with herbicides or fungicides because it is naturally resistant (which is why it's great in the crabitat!)

If you're doing cotton you must do organic because it is one of the most sprayed fibers that we grow in the US. Make sure you treat it with salt water often because it is prone to mold and mildew.

Also I wouldn't use anything dyed, just the natural color. The color may be safe for humans but we have no idea if it's bad for the hermies
