crab and every creature galore day at widby island's beach

Post by crazycrabber » Thu Jul 31, 2014 9:43 am

today has been the best day in my long life! Went in the tide pools saw and caught 50 crabs, massive and tiny, yellow backed and everything! Some were spiders crabs, crabs whose legs represent those of a spider. Also we caught at least 500 hermit crabs in the tide pool, saw and caught shrimp, eels, starfish, etc.... All in the tidepools! It was incredible! I put the real crabs in a shell with the hermit crabs with water, algae, and sand, and shells to hide under, they all stayed and didn't fight! This is nearby cold ocean water seattle, do water or shallow tide pool hermit crabs have different temp and humidity needs? The beach also has a sign that says you may take a limit of 16 shells, only one hermit crab shell until august 1st! Just in time! I took that much! Some will be for their tank decorations, others for their food dishes! The hermit crab shell i did take was too small for my crabs, but i can use them to decorate their tank! Do tide pool hermit crabs have different temp and humidity needs?

and don't worry we released all of those creatures! We released them back in the same place! But that is the most real crabs and hermit crabs that i have ever seen! And there were hermit crab shells all over the beach so i read the sign saying one until august 1st and only took one of the million.

some of the crab's shells were way too small! They will probably molt soon! How do you molt in water? In other words how do tide pool hermit crabs molt?

Yes tide pool hermits have extremely different tank needs like the fact that they have to have constant access to sea water or they dry out and die, these tidal pool hermits are not going to live long in a land hermitcrab set up maybe a couple of days at most but they will die if they are not taken back to the ocean and released. You could theoretically keep them if you had a reef tank but other than that they aren't going to survive long.I do know that semi-aquatic and aquatic hermitcrabs don't do well with being handled and don't like being taken out of their native waters most will quickly stress and die others may fight and stay around a little while longer just depends on the species.
