Just curious - digging 101?

I am curious. When a crab digs a tunnel, how do they keep their shell from filling up with substrate?

They keep their tunnels open around them, pushing the substrate back behind them as they go. That's why it's so important to keep your substrate moistened to the right consistency, so they can make these tunnels easily.

Thanks. I had a dream once that they all had little mining helmits with lights on them.

Not all of them are graceful diggers. I've had them come up packed in sand before! But most have no trouble clearing the way before them and keeping clean while doing it. They sort of do a butterfly stroke under there - in at the front and push around to the back, a little bit at at time. :)
