This is where you discuss shells for your hermit crabs. Not for selling/swapping shells, use Classified Ads for that.

Patching drill holes in shells?? Is this possible

Post by maddyboo13 » Fri Mar 25, 2016 6:33 pm

So I relize this is probley a very stupid question but I found some amazing shells for my hermies at my local thrift store! Score. How ever there is 2 shells that have little drill holes probley for the use of jewelry or windchime crafts. I saw once online a lady who patches her apple snails shells when they crack. Totally different senerio I know but it got me thinking... can I patch or fix a shell so that it's suitible for my crabs. There's a huge shortage of shells in the wild and it would be awesome if I could find a way to use these shells. There in great condition beside the drill hole.
So any ideas or am I just crazy

I really think frag marine epoxy would work. It's used to glue coral pieces to false bases for propagation, so it's invertebrate safe and waterproof. Expensive though! Check a reef forum to find out what is safe, because I've seen a brand of marine epoxy at Home Depot that says it can be used for that purpose. It comes in a little claylike stick and it's kneaded to activate the hardener.

Hi
Put the small sharp edge of your utensil into the deepest part of the scratch marks. Twist the utensil slowly, pushing into the shell. Continue twisting vigorously until you reach the other side of the shell, twist for 5 more seconds then stop. Blow into the hole to clear out the dust, then appraise the holes size.
