Sardines??

Post by Giner13 » Sat Apr 09, 2016 4:36 pm

I saw some canned sardines at the Dollar Tree. Read the ingredient label & it said only sardines, water & salt. If I were to get them & rinse them very well, would they be safe for my little ones?

I do canned sardines for the crabs, even small amounts of the ones in oil. Just don't leave them too long, the few times I've had flies in the house it was from the canned stuff.

I've also done canned sardines in both oil or water but usually I can find ones with no salt or sea salt. I give them a small amount and freeze the rest.

Wonderful! I was wondering how to store the others in between feedings!

I dehydrated sardines. All I would say, is if you do that, do it OUTSIDE of your house. My place smelled like a fish factory for 3 days, it was nauseating...ick

There is some concerns about canned foods because of the possible leaching of metals. But you have to weigh that against the importance of fish in their diets. I'd prefer fresh fish or dried if you have access to them. And I'd feed the skin, bones, and all.
