Upgrading 20 Gal L -> 37 Gal

Post by PinchersAndShells » Thu Sep 22, 2016 10:14 am

I plan on upgrading to a 37 gallon tank. Specifically one that has a base of 30" by 12.5". This way I wouldn't have to buy a new stand. Yes, it has the same floor space as my 20 gallon long, but I want more climbing space, and I don't really wanna do a tank topper. I plan on using small Kritter Keepers for water, but I'm going to double them up as insurance in case one cracks. I mainly want to use them because of the depth. I'm gonna silicone natural aquarium pebbles to the bottom and also maybe create a structure using river stones to help them get in. I'm still debating what to use for that part, as I'm going for a natural look. I'm also going to put very small plastic plants in, one red for the saltwater, and a blue one for the freshwater. I plan on about 7-8" of the 5:1 sand and EE mix. Plastic and silk plants are a must, and I plan on eventually acquiring some actual wood like mopani, cork bark, or ghost wood. Some choya too. Since it's the same length and width of a 20 L, when I get a hood it can be used on either. I might potentially need to get another Ultratherm for it. It all depends on how hot that the tank gets. I'm hoping that since it'll have all of the floor space, plus the climbing and digging room and second levels for shell shops and moss pits, that I could maybe get either two Es or two ruggies. I'm leaning towards the rugs because of the potential E aggression problems. They'd be in the tank with my three PPs.
Any thoughts or advice?

I would lean away from E's unless you plan on getting a 40 breeder tank or larger. They like to dig alot, and really need more molting space than Purple Pinchers.

Alrighty, would rugs still be okay? (If I can find them in local pet stores or adoption,)

Here we reccomend to keep exotics away from anything less than 40g... They really enjoy their space and deeper substrate compared to PP's.
Its not something I know you want to hear, but waiting for a few years is the best option for exotics, as most will have the basics and some of the emergencies down pat, as well as your familiar in how your tank works. :) I've seen people jump into exotics because "they are "exotic".." without the necessary understanding of their crabitats and crab care and have problems in a few months. Like many things, you can't rush into it.

Okay, I wasn't planning on getting them until further down the line anyway, because I know that they all require certain care. Plus PPs seem to be the most hardy out of all of the crabs. I just want rugs eventually because they're my favorite species. Plus I don't want to drain my bank account all at once, so I plan on getting stuff for this tank over time. When it's all set up and if everything is going okay, I will then think about it.

Found an inspiration for a bit of my decor, of course it wouldn't be as large, but I enjoy this idea.

I believe this crabitat is by sugarselections, and I really like the centerpiece with the cork logs. I may look into incorporating something based off of it but of a smaller size.
