New Crab Chirping Up A Storm!

Post by GabyRaven » Tue Oct 04, 2016 9:27 pm

Hey guys! I rescued a medium/large crab (named him BFG) two days ago with a tiny, broken, painted shell, and he immediately switched into a beautiful magpie, then a jade turbo, and then another bigger jade turbo... now, he's up to all kinds of mischief in the coconut hide with his 2 brothers and sister!

Below are the videos of him changing from the atrocious shell to the magpie and of him chirping like crazy! Hope you all enjoy BFG's hello! :)

It's so rewarding when they immediately take advantage of an assortment of natural shells to ditch the nasty paint job they've been forced to live in. Too many newly adopted crabs seem afraid to make the switch as they haven't seen shell choices in a long time and are hesitant to give up the home they have. BFG (love the name!) seems like a confident crab to jump right in and make a switch...and another switch...and another switch

Lol, thanks on the name, and yes it is SO rewarding when they switch quickly, he literally switched within the first 5 minutes of being in my tank, and 3 times within 20 minutes! He also tried on the bigger shells I got him but he chose his smaller green turbo (he has a molt sac so I think he might go down soon *fingers crossed*!) he's super confident, he was chirping for a good 30 minutes for no reason, I checked again and again and they were all huddled like this:

BFG is in the green shell on top, Janet in the turtle shell, Tuna under BFG Image

I adopted a crab last week from the adoptions here and he literally switched out of his horrible painted shell the minute i put him in the tank into one of my guys older magpies i was so relieved he's so happy in his new home with good food , friends a a humidity and heat and natural shells and deep pools of fresh and Marine salt water its def very rewarding !

I think the most rewarding thing is being able to watch them thrive after giving them the home they need and deserve, their personalities shine more and more

Every non-crabber I've ever talked to about my hermit crabs looks at me as though I'm a few cards short of a full deck when I swear that each of the boys has a very distinct personality! We crabbers, of course, are fully aware of this -- in fact, that's often the way to tell similar color, similar size, similar shell crabs apart.

Exactly! It's always a struggle talking about the crabs with non-crabbers, no one is as hype about them as we are so I'm the only one excited when someone switches shells or tries a new food Image
