Heating a 10 gallon

Post by Robncatk » Thu Jun 22, 2017 12:36 am

I have 2 small crabs in a 10 gallon aquarium with about 5 inches of sand/eco earth and a crappy uth zoomed heater thingy that isn't doing squat. I live in Texas, but keep the house pretty cool. I think this is why we don't see them very often. I have both a salt and a fresh water bowl.

What size ultratherm heater should I buy to put on the back wall?

Thanks.

Hi, its reccomended to get the largest heater that will cover the entire back panel of the tank w/o bending the heater. Cant remember off hand how big my 10 is. But thats what most Crabbers do.

Wish I could remember how big mine was...but yea it covered like CrabMater suggests.

Also recommend getting at least 1-2 inches more of sub for your guysthey may get ready to molt any day!

You only want to cover the back above the substrate, so i think mine is 6X17, or 6X20 maybe? That should quickly solve your woes. Also if you have a mesh type lid, you may want to consider wrapping it with plastic wrap or press n seal to keep in heat and humidity.

The one I have is "Aiicioo 16 Watt Durable Reptile Under Tank Heater 8x12 Inch Seeding Heat Mat Hydroponic Growth Heating Pad" (ordered at amazon). It works quite well, with no heat on in the room, it keeps the tank (10 gallon with glass cover) at 75-80 degrees.

I recommend Ultratherms. They are much more reliable, and can be insulated in the winter.
