Hurricane
So you guys know that Texas is being affected by a hurricane. Best of luck to every body in the path. My crabs have been acting completely different though. They are normally all over the tank but today and yesterday they have been hunkering down under and against a piece of mopani I have in the tank. I just want to know if y'all crabs have been experiencing any strange behavior due to the storm. And if you had to evacuate what did you do about your crabs?

Re: Hurricane
I live in Texas, but not going to be badly affected by the storm. Probably just going to be some hard rain. I'm not sure what to say about their behaviors, as I haven't experienced this myself.

Stay safe all of you in Texas! When we had a hurricane in Florida, all of my crabs were up high in the tank

Re: Hurricane
I'm in the DFW so we will just get rain.
I did have to evacuate due to a fire in my first year here. We put the crabs in a tote tank and took them to my mom's house.
Heat and humidity in Texas aren't an issue till it's too hot. (High 90's/100's).

Re: Hurricane
We were just talking about this at our house last night! Normally when a storm, or even just rain, is coming our way all of my little guys climb as high as they can! My PP's don't normally leave the their hut except to eat, but they'll hang out at the top of the vines for days even after it stops raining, as if they're waiting for the flood waters to recede or something? My E's like to crawl across the mesh top anyway, but they'll hang upside down up there until the weather settles. (I don't know how they can hold on that long, but they'll sleep like that! Ha!)NLindsey921 wrote:So you guys know that Texas is being affected by a hurricane. Best of luck to every body in the path. My crabs have been acting completely different though. Anyway, yesterday both of my PP's buried, as well as the rest of my E's that are up (2 have been down for about a month or so, molting. Or plotting to take over the world. You know. Whatever they do down there...)
I'm in Texas but far enough inland that we're merely hoping for rain. I can certainly feel the pressure changes myself, but the little dudes seem to be able to tell the difference in what's conning enough to "prepare" (even if they are too dumb to know they're safe! )

Re: Hurricane
What I find most interesting is that the crabs split up by species. My pps are against the mopani and my es are inside the cork log.

Re: Hurricane
When we've had remnants come through (in Ohio, so we get the tail end of the really bad ones) my crabs have always acted unusual. I'm sure being from the tropics that they have an inate understanding that low barometric pressure means danger is coming.

Re: Hurricane
That makes complete since. I assumed they would act weird but I expected them to go high. Instead they are just hiding underneath things.

Re: Hurricane
Winds in trees would kill them, flooding on beaches would kill them. I imagine they head inland for shelter in the wild, but don't really have that option in tanks so they just end up acting weird!

Re: Hurricane
Mine pretty much always stick together. I think if my PP's could find a double shell they'd be in it together. Like a crab duplexNLindsey921 wrote:What I find most interesting is that the crabs split up by species. My pps are against the mopani and my es are inside the cork log.
