Molting against the glass.

Post by JamieL » Thu Aug 31, 2017 5:37 pm

So I upgraded to a larger tank, and I have one molter down...I had 3 down, two came up within the last week or two. I have two nearly identical crabs in the same green turbo shell. One came up last week, all hairy and fresh, the other green shell guy was still down. I had to move the tank to uprade, I didn't want to wait in case anyone else went down, so my husband and I carefully lifted it and moved it a few feet, we set it down really gently and seemed to be fine. This morning I was setting up the new tank and I saw a green shell crab digging against the glass. I assumed it was Herman who just finished his molt, digging recreationally, since they seemed to sit and watch me from the hole most of the morning. I just looked back and now this crab is not moving, half out of the shell- looks like they are actively molting. I cannot find Herman, so I can't confirm, he's either digging somewhere else or just hidden very well. I'm thinking maybe the move disturbed the other molter and he for some reason moved to where he is and got started? It can't possibly be Herman molting again after a week? I'll of course cover the cave with dark paper or something. Hopefully Herman appears later so I can confirm identities.

TL;DR: I moved the tank with a molter and I think he moved and is molting against the glass.

My first crabbie molted in a little cave he made right up against the glass. He left me a nice lil window to watch him in. It was very weird and very cool! He got very still and quit moving. Then a few days later I saw his exo hanging out of his shell and It kinda looked like he had died but then I could just barley see little pink jelly crab legs inside his shell and few days later he started eating his exo. I did keep a piece of card board taped over his window but couldn't help but peek in on him every day.

Well, I'm honestly not sure. Herman is very hairy, I can't tell if this crab is hairy through the sandy glass. So, since I posted this he finally moved - super weird, he was hanging out of his shell, not moving and not responding to me being near for 2 hours. Now he's moving again, in his cave. Maybe I was right the first time and he's just hanging out. So I'm still unsure if this is Herman, just digging for fun, or if this is the other crab who was down, still no one else above ground. I guess I'll have to watch and see if they fill in the window, or come up

Herman, a week ago when he came up:

I mean, is that a handsome dude or what??

He is very handsome indeed! :D actually, I too have a handsome lil crab in a lil green turbo just like that one annnnnd his name is Herman too! we call him Hermie for short. He is my "sub terraranian crab" because he spends all his time underground. i see him sneak out for a bit to eat every now and then. He was up for a bit last night. He changed into a white pearlized shell and strutted around in it for a bit but then I found it disguarded in the sub this morning and the green turbo is missing...silly guy

They're so funny. I took in a crab from another member here who is like that. Serial digger, and will spend all day underground. I didn't even see him for days until I spotted him late at night, I just had pet sand and a trashed tank every morning until I finally caught him and moved him to the main tank.

Crab update: whoever it was surfaced (I still don't know why they were hanging limply out of their shell for two hours, but I guess crabs are just weird?). We apprehended the suspect, but I'm still not certain if it was Herman, or my other, unnamed crab - this guys legs are pretty bright red, and as you can see from the photo, Herman is more of a dark red brown. I can't look closer yet, because my husband and I unfortunately scared the poop out of him moving him, and he's hiding. He just WOULD NOT LET GO of the fishnet, and I didn't want to hurt him. We ended up cutting the net to move him to the new tank before he could potentially bury and escape again, and he's probably terrified. Sorry, crab, it's for your own good.

Either way, I still have a crab M.I.A.
