Crabs from petsmart health

Post by Sherman12Sherman » Fri Mar 09, 2018 9:51 pm

All 3 crabs I’ve bought from petsmart have passed away. But my crab I got from a shop at gulf shores is still perfectly healthy. I’m sad and tired of my crabs dying and want my original crab to have a friend. The 3 I’ve got from petsmart died within months. Am I doing anything wrong but my crab for gulf shores is still fine. Are crabs from petsmart not healthy???

I got my crab, Peanut, from Petsmart, and he just went down for his first molt. Different stores have different conditions, and there's no way to tell which crabs Post-Purchase Syndrome will strike. So sorry about your crabs. :(

Have you answered the questions in the help template from the ER? That gives us a complete picture of your conditions and we can spot if anything is wrong.

I think the likely issue is Post Purchase Syndrome and probably isn't anything you are doing/not doing. Especially in winter, things can happen during transport and crabs can linger a long time after sustaining injuries.

However, there is a slim chance that the one you purchased at the beach is super hardy and is able to deal with problems that others cannot. The questions will let us know if that is the case!

4 of my Crabs are from.pet smart and one from.pet supermarket. All of mine are alive and healthy and huge. Maybe I got lucky they Going on 3years now. Its all about the right environment and diet. I'm.sure some are so.stressed they die but if they make it through their first molt they usually grow from there. My crabs started out in a 29 gallon tank and now they're in a 70 gallon tank terrarium style environment heat humidity organic diet and right substrate all factors

How deep is your substrate? What do you use for water? What are the temp and humidity?

About 6 to 8 inches temp and humidity at 75 to 80 always.

Water is fresh spring water. And I use instant ocean to make my salt water. Half cup of salt to gallon of water make sure you dump some water out first in gallon of water before adding salt it will over flow immediately

I should have also asked you to fill this in, rather than my just jumping in with random questions. Apologies to the moderators.

You might just have had some bad luck with your local Petsmart. Do you live somewhere that has generally cold temps? Shipping conditions to that store could be the culprit.

It's been the opposite for me, my crabs from souvenir shops on the coast have passed away while my Petsmart crabs are thriving. Though my biggest crab could be one of my original pair but it's hard to tell.
My local Petsmart doesn't order them often but all ones I've gotten have been healthy. First molt is when my past crabs have died and that generally happened months to a year after purchase. All that have survived their first molt thrived.
Infact I bought one in Nov and was worried he died, only for him to suddenly appear yesterday and cause a commotion in the tank.
