Blueberry Hermit Crabs

Post by hermitsrus1966 » Wed Feb 19, 2020 10:57 am

I have heard of Blueberry hermit crabs but I have never heard of anyone owning them. Do they even exist? Does anyone own them?

Blueberry Hermit Crabs

First- just google them- they’ll pop up! Second, yes there are a few stateside, however they no longer legally allow them to be exported. They will still show up occasionally but very rarely.

Thank you! I have looked them up, but after never seeing or hearing anything about them (even though I like practically live on this website) I began to have second thoughts that maybe I was crazy or something.

There is also the newly classified coenobita lila. The lila was listed as a new species in 2016. I have seen posts in other groups of people being able to purchase these currently in the US. Places may very well be selling these at blueberries when they are actually lila's.

Lila and Viola have been sold as blueberries throughout the years. True blueberries are in the Southern Japanese archipelago, and maybe a bit farther South than that. The other 2 are found on Island nations that regularly export crabs.
