Shells from the beach

Post by Randomguy! » Mon Oct 19, 2020 2:56 pm

Hello, I collected shells from the beach in Maryland and want to put them in the crabs’ tank to be used as food bowls or grind them up to use in a calcium pit. Would this be safe for the crabs?

I would think there wouldn't be a problem with that. I would clean them first though, in boiling fresh or marine salt water. 5 minutes would probably do it.

Agree. A rolling boil will ensure that no microbes will transfer to the tank and potentially make the crabs sick.

Thank you, I will definitely boil the shells before adding them. I was more concerned about the possible pollutants from the ocean. Could there be enough pollutants like micro plastics to harm the crabs?

I doubt microplastics from shells being an issue, a lot of natural decor (collected naturally) may be exposed leading to some level of microplastics accumulation. The way I see it, the addition of plastic decor, bowls, and the like could theoretically be an issue.

(Imo, don't sweat the small stuff... literally ;) )
