HELP! Hermit crab lethargic after molting!
HELP! Hermit crab lethargic after molting!
My hermit crab just came up from a 1.5 month molt 24 hours ago. He has been sitting in the corner of the tank and minimally moving or reacting when I shine the light on him. I put out food (from hermitcrab etsy food shops) and waters for him (fresh and marine salt), and overnight he only went into one of the waters but didn't touch the food. Is this a sign of dying?? I'm going on vacation tomorrow so I won't be able to monitor him Please help!

A couple of mine always act like anything will get them if they move to much after a molt. Even though nothing has been moved while they were under. I've not really payed attention, but it takes a bit for them to act more "normal". Whatever that is.

I can hear my 75g whispering from the barn.

I also make sure there is more than one type of calcium and a dried protein while they are down. When I notice ones come up. I add fresh protein, fruit and bee pollen. Then in a day or two, I go back to normal feedings.

My experience with lethargic crabs are minimal but I’ll share in case it helps.
The two crabs I got as friends for our original crab were not too active at first. They spent a lot of time visiting the pools. Almost like they had been deprived of water. One of them dug down not long after purchase. She came up 2 months later and was fairly active. But about a month later she and the other I got with her became lethargic. It may have been my water as I was having problems cycling them. I had problems with nitrites. But finally figured out the filter needed cleaned. She died and I blame my water. The other one finally seemed well. He became very active walking on the wheel for days at a time. After having him for maybe 6-7 months he finally dug down. He was also gone for 2 months. When he came up he was missing a limb. He changed into a super small shell and was super lethargic. He spent a lot of time hanging over the saltwater pool. He finally died.
Our original crab is still with us but showed some lethargy after his last molt which was his 3rd or 4th molt with us. It lasted 2-3 days. He was still quick on his feet when need be but he wasn’t the same ole super active all the time crab that he’s been. He was back to normal after two or three days but I hope that is not a sign of things to come after future molts.
Edit to add: he is chowing down on some egg or shrimp I just added at this very moment
