Marine Salt Question

Post by amhet88 » Thu Jan 21, 2021 12:21 pm

I've been having an issue with my marine salt becoming hard as a rock. Is there anyway to prevent this from happening? Would storing the salt in Tupperware help? Thanks!

that actually happened to the first bag i ever got when i put it in tupperware but i think the lid just wasn’t on right
but the now i just keep it in the bag and make sure i fold it well like a potato chip bag and keep it back in the box and i haven’t had any problems

Pretty sure this happens because there are no decaking agents in the salt(which is a good thing; it means it’s pure). The previous reply has some good solutions!

Hello! I used to keep fish for years, marine ones too and this happens when the salt is stagnant in its conditions - if there's moisture present in your house and therefore, in your salt bag, your salt will "leach" some stuff and cake up on you.

I'd suggest, depending on the size of your marine salt bag, getting some of those little dehydrating/moisture whicking packets - they're usually silicone based. Storing your marine salt all in 1 bag will definitely make this happen faster - so if you can, spread your load out into tupperware containers with at least 1 - 2 of the packets. If your bag is a big old clump, you need to break it up by banging it on the floor, a countertop, etc.

If your salt glumps up this doesn't mean it's bad! Just means, too much moisture is getting in the bag.
