Since you've come to the emergency forum, we know you want a fast answer to your question. In order for us to figure out the problem as quickly as possible, we ask that you answer the following questions as best you can. Some of them may seem odd, but they're all designed to give us the information we need to give you a good solution for your problem. The things in the [ brackets ] are there to make this post easier to read once submitted. Thanks!

1. What kind of substrate is used in your tank and how deep is it? All purpose sand washed and cooked. 6 inches deep.

2. Do you have gauges in the tank to measure temperature and humidity? If so, where are they located and what temperature and humidity do they usually read? I have thermometer and humidity gauge near top of tank inside. 80 degrees, 92% humidity

3. Is a heat source used in the tank? If so, what? heating pad used on back of tank 1/3 below substrate, 2/3 above substrate.

4. What types of water are available (fresh or salt) and how is the water treated (what brands of dechlorinator or salt mix and what ratio is used to mix it)? spring water in one dish and salt water in another dish. salt water made from distilled water using instant ocean 1/2c per gallon.

Make sure they get a source of protein!

Eventually, you will have to get a larger tank, but as long as your hermit crabs are currently small, a 10 gal tank will work

9. How many crabs are in the tank and about how large are they? 2 hermit crabs, both about the in shells about as wide as a quarter.
Are any of the hermit crabs in painted shells?

10. How many extra shells are usually kept in the tank, if any? 8 extra shells.

Are any shells painted?

Are you sure the hermit crab is definitely dead? Many times people think the hermit crab has died when the hermie has simply just molted, and the "body" is simply an exo skeleton. Is there still a hermit crab inside the shell?

Your tank conditions sound great. As stated, be sure they have a source of protein and calcium daily; hermit crabs do best with a varied diet.
Unfortunately, crabs go through so much before we get them, that they are sometimes unable to overcome it even if we get them into perfect conditions. 'Post Purchase Syndrome' is a catch-all phrase for what can happen in the time up until their first molt, when they are at highest risk of dying. There is really nothing we can do to prevent it - just do exactly what you are doing, having them in ideal conditions.
