Dead or molting?

Post by hsmillard1 » Wed May 08, 2024 4:55 pm

Hello, I got my 2 hermit crabs on March 23,2024. On March 27,2024 they buried themselves. One for 4 weeks, emerging on April 25th. The other is still buried today. The one that emerged was very active until today. I came home from work, it was laying on its side partially hanging from the shell. I picked it up and it was limp, didn’t pull back into the shell. They have sand and coconut substrate. Humidity at 80, temp at 80. Store bought jugged distilled water with clean sponge, changed every 48 hours. Food available is dried berries and “premium variety diet for hermit crabs” made of dried shrimp, fish meal, etc.

Crabs go through so much before we get them, that sometimes they are not able to survive, even with good conditions.
Have you read through our care sheets? Start with the basics, then have a look at the nutrition and water care sheets as well.

If he fell out of the shell, I'm afraid he has probably passed away. You could put him in a small container like a margarine tub inside the main tank, and wait a day or two to see if he starts to smell.
