Cholla smell

What does the cholla wood smell like? I got some second hand and it smells like cigarettes. Is that normal or maybe these people were smokers? I am waiting to find out before I attempt to put them in the tank. I soaked them in salt water and they still smell funny. Do they have a distinct odor?

For anyone who has a similar question in the future, once dried, there was no odor.

Cholla doesn’t normally smell like smoke. Keep an eye on it (or a nose) to make sure it doesn’t come back after being exposed to heat and humidity
