Bad News

Post by unicorn_malice » Sat Mar 31, 2012 9:54 am

Jareth did not survive his molt. I have some questions about it. I noticed when I found him that his cave was about 1/2 filled with water. His head was dunked into the water. Is that his shell water, or did his cave flood from me spraying too much? I read that I was supposed to spray the area he was under profusely, so I did. I'm wondering if it was the wrong thing. :( I am so sad. My first molt is a total failure.

This is what it looks like:

That's way too much to be shell water, I think the advice to spray profusely might not have been the best advice. I think you'll need to drain some of that water out now too when you get him. You're only supposed to spray enough to keep the sand sand castle consistency. So sorry :(

Sorry. :( Very sad picture.

If the crab is able to form air space under the substrate, you don't need to spray a lot of water there. Just enough to keep it sand-castle consistency like kuza said.

How many crabs do you have? You need to change out the substrate ASAP to prevent it from happening to others.

Thanks, everyone. I feel awful. I have already removed him, and actually moved my other crab (Jadis) over to the 40 gallon I have had set up for a few weeks now. I will be getting some friends for Jadis, probably today. Luckily no one else is under the sand molting right now.
